THE IPHONE'S domination of mobile data consumption is coming to an end as Android is expected to surpass Apple's share thanks to tablets and smartphones in the months to come.
According to Cisco's visual networking global mobile data traffic forecast for 2010 to 2015, at the beginning of last year Iphone data levels were four times greater than any other smartphone. But by the end of 2010, Iphone data consumption was only 1.75 times greater than that of Android.
Android will overtake Apple platforms in the mobile data stakes as tablets become more popular. Cisco says that tablets generate five times more traffic than smartphones and it predicts that the Google OS will dominate the tablet market.
Cisco said, "In 2010, 3 million tablets were connected to the mobile network...mobile data traffic per tablet was 405MB per month, compared to 79MB per month per smartphone."
Tablets are seen as such a huge growth area that Cisco is forecasting as much tablet generated data in 2015, 248 petabytes per month, as there was for the entire global mobile network in 2010, 242 petabytes per month.
Of the world's mobile data traffic, video is expected to represent two thirds of it, suggesting that streaming telly via tablets is going to be a big market. ยต
